The Byblos Bank Story
Established in Jbeil, Lebanon, in 1950, the Byblos Bank Group is a leading financial institution focused on domestic and selected overseas markets. Byblos Bank now has an extensive branch network spread evenly across Lebanon. The Group also has expanded to several other countries, including Armenia, Belgium, Cyprus, France, Iraq, Nigeria, Sudan, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and, most recently, the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

1950
Establishment of Société Commerciale et Agricole Byblos Bassil Frères & Co., engaged in natural silk and leather tanning and agricultural credit activities.
2016
Acquisition of Banque Pharaon & Chiha, Lebanon’s oldest bank established in 1876.
2013
Introduction of first biosourced debit and credit cards in the Middle East.
2012
Issuance of USD 300 million in 6.5% convertible fiduciary notes due in 2022.
2011
Issuance of USD 300 million in Byblos Bank ten-year Eurobonds; opening of Byblos Bank Africa Khartoum Tower; Byblos Bank S.A.L. increased its share in Byblos Bank Syria from 41.5% to 52.37%
2010
Acquisition of 66.7% stake in Solidaire Banque Internationale, a bank incorporated in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, now renamed as Byblos Bank RDC; Investment of USD 100 million by the International Finance Corporation, the private sector arm of the World Bank, and USD 30 million by PROPARCO, the Agence Française de Développement’s private sector investment arm, in the shares of Byblos Bank S.A.L.
2009
Listing on the London Stock Exchange; issuance of USD 200 million in Series 2009 Preferred Shares; opening of Representative Office in Nigeria.
2008
Opening of 75th branch of Byblos Bank S.A.L. in Lebanon; issuance of USD 200 million in Series 2008 Preferred Shares; acquisition of Unicredit Banco Di Roma's Lebanon branch.
2007
Acquisition of 100 percent stake in Armenia's International Trade Bank C.J.S.C., renamed Byblos Bank Armenia C.J.S.C.
2006
Commencement of Byblos Bank S.A.L. operations in Erbil, Iraq.
2005
Opening of Representative Office in Abu Dhabi, UAE; opening of Byblos Bank Syria S.A. with Byblos Bank S.A.L. holding 41.5 percent of shares, the OPEC Fund 7.5 percent and Syrian investors 51 percent.
2004
The Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector takes a 10 percent stake in Byblos Bank Africa, joining the OPEC Fund for International Development (20 percent) as a minority shareholder.
2003
Opening of Byblos Bank Africa in Khartoum, Sudan.
2002
Acquisition of assets and liabilities of ABN AMRO Bank N.V.'s Lebanon branch.
2000
Acquisition of Wedge Bank Middle East's Lebanon branch; acquisition of assets of ING Barings' Lebanon branch.
1999
Acquisition of Bank of Nova Scotia's Lebanon branch.
1998
Full integration of the subsidiary in Europe as Byblos Bank Europe S.A.
1997
Acquisition of Banque de Beyrouth pour le Commerce; listing of 30 percent of shares on Beirut Stock Exchange.
1983
Establishment of Adonis Insurance and Reinsurance Company S.A.L. (ADIR).
1976
Establishment of Byblos Bank Europe in Brussels (branches in Paris and London).
1963
Company's name changed to Byblos Bank S.A.L. and registration with Central Bank of Lebanon.
